MADISON — A drug interdiction officer working on I-55 early Monday morning arrested two people for drug trafficking after finding 103 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle, police said.

At 1:04 a.m., a traffic stop was made near mile marker 109 in Madison for careless driving, according to a release from the Madison Police Department.

“During the course of the traffic stop, the officer noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” the release stated. “Following an alert by the officer’s K9, approximately 103 pounds of marijuana was discovered.”

A Grenada woman accompanied by a Texas man were then taken into custody and police say it was determined the drugs were going to Grenada.

Lanekia Michelle Brown and Marcus Anthony Redrick were both charged with trafficking of a controlled substance.

Madison narcotics investigators coordinated a search of Brown’s Grenada residence with help from the Grenada Police Department and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and an additional two pounds of marijuana were recovered. Police say in addition to the marijuana, investigators found “packaging material and scales used for distribution” in Brown’s Grenada residence.

Both Brown and Redrick remain in custody at the Madison County Detention Center on no bond.
