After narrowing down the search to two candidates last week, the Canton Public Schools Board of Trustees announced on Tuesday that a new superintendent has been selected to lead the school.

Gary P. Hannah, a current assistant superintendent with Jackson Public Schools since 2017, emerged from an initial field of 19 candidates as the new leader in Canton.

Prior to starting at JPS, Hannah was a deputy superintendent for the Marshall County School District for five years, and was named Marshall County Educator of the Year in 2016.

The other finalist for the position was Earl Joe Nelson, principal at Pass Christian Middle School.

A public forum was held on Monday at Canton High School where community stakeholders were given an opportunity to ask questions to the two finalists.

The district has been without a full-time superintendent since the board fired Cassandra Williams in May.
