A 21-year-old from Madison County was fatally injured following a hit-and-run accident in Jackson this past weekend.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart identified the man, Zachary Spell, 21, of Gluckstadt, as the victim.

Spell is the son of Melvin and Lara Spell of Gluckstadt and a 2015 graduate of Germantown High School where he played football.

After graduation, he attended Holmes Community College, the University of Mississippi and, finally, settled at Hinds Community College to study Electro-Mechanical Technology. He was due to receive full certification in May.

In his free time, he was an active outdoorsman.

The Jackson Police Department said the accident occurred early Saturday morning. They were investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred in the 5400 block of I-55N Frontage near Briarwood Dr.

They said a 21-year-old white male was found in the roadway just after 2:33 a.m., unresponsive and with injuries consistent with a collision.

JPD announced on Wednesday that they are looking for a mid-2000s model Chevy Equinox in relation to the hit and run.

“Should have front end damage on driver's side,” officials said.

The case remains under investigation.
