RIDGELAND — A suspect in a weekend homicide here was later apprehended by authorities in a Delta county.

Authorities identified Sunday’s homicide victim as Henry Lee Gray, 67, of Ridgeland.

Police Chief John Neal said on Monday that they identified the suspect as Robert Lee Shelton, 39, of Jackson. He is the son of Gray.

Shelton was apprehended in Humphreys County by local authorities.

“Attempts to locate Shelton were underway this past weekend,” Neal said. “He was trying to leave the state, but a relative convinced him to turn himself in. He stopped in Humphrey County and contacted local authorities.”

Shelton is now in the custody of the RPD.

Neal said that Sunday, April 14, at approximately 12:35 p.m., officers of the Ridgeland Police Department responded to 7116 Old Canton Road after receiving a 911 emergency call of a subject being shot at this address.

They responded with Ridgeland Fire Department personnel.

Upon the officers’ arrival, they found Gray laying on the floor of the living room having sustained several gunshots to the torso area of his body.

Gray was the homeowner of the residence.

Neal said the exact number of shots sustained has not been determined.

“We are still waiting on results of an autopsy,” Neal said Tuesday evening.

Ridgeland Fire paramedics and Pafford Ambulance performed medical procedures in an attempt to sustain his life but the victim died on scene, officials said.

Interviews with additional family members at the scene identified the suspect as the son of the victim.

Neal said that a clear motive has not been determined though it was determined the shooting was the result of a domestic situation.

There were several other people inside the residence who gave statements and information to the officers on the scene, Neal said.

Neal said that Shelton has not said much outside what they already know. The chief added that the shooting remains under investigation at this time. He did say the weapon was recovered.
