The Ridgeland Historical Society is hosting a Christmas tree lighting at the newly-minted Railroad District to ring in the holiday season.

The organization is planning the second annual Christmas Tree Lighting event for Dec. 5 from 6-8 p.m.

Community Development Director Alan Hart said that there will be entertainment, a Christmas Market, food, Santa Claus, the lighting event and more.

The city’s Christmas Parade is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will go through Olde Towne Station, Jackson Street, Sunnybrook Road and Ridgeland Avenue.

“This community event is a great place to see our community celebrating the Christmas season in the Railroad District in Old Town Ridgeland,” Hart said.

The event will be centered around the Plaza at Old Town Crossing. The plaza was formally named at a ceremony in on Nov. 6. The street that runs parallel to the railroad was renamed to Old Town Crossing.

The area was recently christened the Railroad District.

The naming of the Railroad District came about when the members of the Historical Society and representatives from the business community on Jackson Street wanted to find a name and create an identity for the area.
