Madison County supervisors are investing $8 million they received from the state Legislature last year to help with funding construction of a Reunion Parkway bridge over I-55.

Supervisors voted unanimously on Monday to invest the money into a one-year CD (certificate of deposit) with BankFirst to generate interest while plans are currently underway to move forward with the project.

Comptroller Greg Higginbotham told supervisors that since it was allocated for a specific purpose by the Legislature, the county was limited on what it could do wit the money.

Higginbotham said he spoke with multiple banks and BankFirst submitted the highest interest rate at 2.82 percent.

Other bank interest rate quotes received by the county included 2.65 percent from The First Bank, 2.47 percent from Trustmark Bank, and 2.26 percent from Origin Bank.

Gilda Reyes, CCID program director with the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration, sent an email to the county stating the money must be “maintained in a separate bank account” and they “cannot be comingled with other funds.”

The county has three years to spend the money that came following a special session of the legislature in August 2018, which divvied up $700 million in BP oil settlement money.

The bridge is needed in anticipation of a future interchange. Considered Reunion Parkway Phase II, the road and bridge would run from where Reunion ends at Bozeman Road and extend the roadway to Parkway East, which is east of I-55.

Reunion Phase III, which is currently under design, will connect Parkway East with U.S. 51 further east.

Once the bridge is built it will be up to the Mississippi Department of Transportation to build interchange ramps connecting the Parkway to I-55.
