Canton’s Ward 7 has new representation after the swearing in of Alderman Lafayette Wales Tuesday afternoon.

Wales, a 59-year-old retiree of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, defeated local bailbondsman Keith Warfield in a special election 180 votes to 103 earlier this month.

He replaces former Alderman Andrew Grant, who resigned his position as part of a plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit voter fraud. Grant’s five-year prison sentence was suspended, but he was forced to resign due to Section 44 of the Mississippi Constitution, which bars anyone convicted of a felony or “infamous crime” from holding public office.

Wales ran on a platform of inclusivity.

“We need to stop some of the divisiveness and make sure the city works for all the people,” Wales said. “We need to make sure everyone has the same opportunities and grow our school systems.”
