Work continues on I-55 northbound in Madison County in an attempt to alleviate peak time drive congestion.

The $12.3 million project, awarded by the Mississippi Department of Transportation to Key Constructors LLC of Madison, will include an additional northbound lane from Highway 51 to the Natchez Trace exit ramp, as well as widening of the I-55 northbound bridge under the I-220 flyover.

“With a high volume of traffic traveling I-55 northbound in the afternoons during the week, a significant bottleneck develops at the I-55/I-220 split,” said Central District Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall. “This project will reduce congestion and increase drive times while improving the safety of the traveling public.”

Much of the bridge widening work has already been completed and dirt work is underway for the new lane.

The overall project began in October is is expected to continue for another year in the summer of 2020.

Hall said to expect lane closures during the entirety of the project.

“We ask for the traveling public’s patience as this project moves forward, and urge motorists to use extreme caution by slowing down and avoiding distractions in construction zones,” Hall said.

Hall added that MDOT has shifted many of its projects due to budgetary restrictions.

“Because of shortfalls in current transportation funding, the majority of MDOT’s projects reflect the agency’s continued shift from capacity upgrades to system preservation and maintenance,” he said.
