RIDGELAND — Aldermen approved a second leisure and entertainment district at Northpark that will allow for the open air consumption of alcohol that incorporates the field where Balloon Glow is hosted annually.

The space in question is 7.9 acres of exterior land situated north of Northpark Drive and west of Pear Orchard Road.

The resolution was unanimously approved, 5-0, by the Mayor and Board of Alderman on Tuesday.

Community Development Director Alan Hart said that the current ordinance would largely accommodate Balloon Glow.

“This is something we have been working for some time,” Hart said.

Hart said that he expects to make addendums and edits to this project in the future, but they wanted to go ahead and get something on the books for Balloon Glow.

“There are a lot of moving parts but we want to establish the backbone of an ordinance so that we can define what events will look like at this spot moving forward,” Hart said.

The ordinance allows vendors to serve alcoholic beverages including liquor wine and beer in opaque cups of specific amounts per state guidelines. It will go into effect in 30 days.

Hart said that it is similar to what was passed last February for Renaissance at Colony Park.
