RIDGELAND — A $2 million project to extend Rice Road west across U.S. 51 establishing another entrance into the new City Center complex is well underway.

Construction began in April after officials awarded a bid to Hemphill Construction in February this year.

Lisa Walters, executive assistant to Mayor Gene McGee of Ridgeland, said the road work extension should be completed by the fourth quarter of 2021 or sometime in the first quarter of 2022.

“This road is a continuation of the Master Plan for development of the remaining portions of the City Center site,” Walters said. “It will provide safe and convenient access for the future growth of this development as well as accommodate future growth, and will connect from Highway 51 across from the existing Rice Road to the front of City Hall.”

Walters said the road is planned to be aligned with a signalized intersection at Highway 51 and a multi-use trail along the entire distance.

In February, the aldermen voted unanimously, 7-0, to award a $2,095,667.45 low bid for the project to Hemphill Construction, based in Florence. Hemphill was chosen out of five other companies that submitted bids.

At the time of the bid award, McGee said the road extension would provide an alternate entrance to City Center to the north of the complex.

“This is really just another phase of development of the City Center Project,” McGee said.
