BBQ cookoff Saturday on the Square

CANTON — A BBQ Cook-Off competition Saturday on the historic Square will offer plenty of food and activities, organizers said.

“This is a big way to bring the community together,” Canton Chamber Main Street Association President Chris Jackson said. 

“We’re letting people know the Chamber is here to support them in any ways they need us. We are here to listen to any concerns they have and to partner with them in future events they might want to host.”

Vendors will be selling shaved ice and fried catfish along with a host of other snacks and foods. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy, said Canton Chamber Main Street Association Vice President Comelia Walker.

Jackson said the cook-off will be a friendly competition where participants can make any barbecue dish they want, as long as it is not pre-cooked. 

“People participating can make ribs, chicken or any barbecue,” Jackson said. “They can also sell their dishes to the public.”

Trophies and bragging rights will be awarded for first, second and third-place finishers.

Social distancing and masks are encouraged,

Chamber member Jonathan Dixon said he hopes the cook-off will give people something fun to do on Saturday and he hopes the event will expand and grow over the next several years.

“This will show the Canton Chamber is back together,” Dixon said. “It’ll show a positive light on Canton and that we’re doing something Canton citizens can enjoy. They can come out, have a good time, and enjoy some great food.”

Dixon said the Chamber is also considering starting a “Vendor Friday,” where all types of food vendors can set up around the Square.

“We’re looking to start doing that on a Friday once a month, and if it gets more popular, we’ll expand it to two times a month,” Dixon said.
