COVID deaths increase by 8

Madison County has recorded eight new deaths and 159 new COVID-19 cases in the past week, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health’s Sept. 22 report.

Madison County has now recorded a total of 14,120 COVID-19 cases and 271 deaths since the pandemic began in March 2020, according to the MSDH. Those numbers are up from last week’s report of 13,961 total cases and 263 deaths in the county.

Madison County continues to have one of the state’s highest vaccination rates with 64,447 or 61% of people having received one dose of a vaccine and 58,711 or 55% of people having received two doses.

For the week of Sept. 20, the latest date for which figures are available, the Madison County Schools District reported 31 active COVID-19 cases, which is 0.21% percent of the on-campus population with 176 people quarantining.

The statewide vaccination rate stands at 40% of residents having received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and 46% of residents having received one dose.

Statewide, since the pandemic began in March 2020, 277,050 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been recorded by the MSDH along with 202,276 probable cases, totaling 479,326 cases. There have been 6,292 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, along with 3,061 probable deaths, totaling 9,353 deaths.
