A minor diesel spill at a country store in rural Madison County last week was contained.

A diesel pump at Michael’s country store in Camden malfunctioned, resulting in about 15 gallons of fuel spilling, according to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

“No injuries were reported at this time,” MDEQ spokeswoman Jan Schaefer said. “There is no threat to public health or safety.”

On the morning of Wednesday, June 25, Madison County Emergency Management personnel responded just before 9 a.m. to the store located at 5672 Highway 43, about 20 miles north of Canton.

Schaefer said the incident was “relatively minor” based on an MDEQ report and noted that the store primarily handled the cleanup of the incident.

“MDEQ’s Emergency Response team remains in communication with the site to verify appropriate cleanup measures have been completed,” the report says.

“The spill affected a small area, including some soil, pavement, a nearby drainage ditch, and surface water runoff,” according to the MDEQ report.
