Velma Jackson used a solid defensive performance and rode a hot hand to secure a 65-57 win over St. Andrew’s in a Madison County rivalry on Tuesday night, moving to 2-4 on the season.

It was an even battle between the two teams early throughout most of the game, as both teams traded buckets early on before Velma Jackson used a small run before halftime to take a 36-32 lead into the break.

The Falcons were able to maintain that performance throughout the second half and amped up their pressure on the defensive end to secure the victory.

“We did a really good job of executing the gameplan tonight,” Velma Jackson Head Coach Jeremy Jackson said. “We knew they were going to have the size advantage on us tonight, so we really wanted to use our guards to control the game and get us the win tonight.”

Velma Jackson was led in the scoring column by a huge 26-point performance by guard J’Ashton Williams, who is one of the senior leaders for this Falcons team.

As for St. Andrew’s, the Saints are on the younger side and will continue to improve as the season goes along. Senior Drew McDonald led the way with 18 points off the bench and is coming off of a successful football season himself.

Velma Jackson will travel to Leake Central on Saturday for their next game, while St. Andrew’s falls to 3-5 and will be on the road to take on Jefferson County for their next game on Friday night.
