Germantown High School is the latest school to transition to virtual learning as cases of COVID-19 continue to increase in the county.

Last week, students at Madison Central High School and Velma Jackson High School transitioned to online learning after outbreaks in the schools. 

Students at all three schools will return to the classroom after the Christmas holidays.

“This decision, made in consultation with the Mississippi Department of Health, is in compliance with Madison County Schools’ pandemic protocols to stop the spread of illness,” the district stated in a release.

According to a report released by the Mississippi State Department of Health on Tuesday, Germantown High School has 49 cases among students and 11 among faculty and staff since classes began in September. Last week, there were 35 students quarantined. 

Madison Central has had 18 positive cases amongst students and 19 among faculty and staff. 

Velma Jackson is reporting 10 cases among students with 1-5 reported among teachers and staff. 

Madison Avenue Elementary remains the only school in the district with no reported cases. 

The schools with the largest number of cases to date are Germantown High School (49), Madison Middle School (35), and Ridgeland High School (23). 

Madison-Ridgeland Academy has the most confirmed cases of any public or private school in the county, according to MSDH, with 50. A total of 15 faculty and staff have also tested positive. Last week, there were 99 students quarantined.

Last week, 100 students at Madison Station Elementary, which has had 15 total cases, were quarantined. Highland Elementary had 45 students quarantined as well but have reported only 1-5 total cases.

In Madison County, there have been 636 new cases identified since last week, with a total here of 6,114. The weekly increase nearly doubled from the week before. There have been 123 deaths here attributed to the virus, up nine from last week.

Madison County remains under a mandatory mask ordinance by Gov. Tate Reeves until Jan. 15, 2021.

On Wednesday, the MSDH identified 2,343 new cases of COVID-19 across the state with 42 new deaths.

COVID-19 hospitalizations across the state have risen from 669 on Nov. 10 to an all-time high of  1,196 on Dec. 13. Patients in the ICU are also nearing an all-time high at 303, as the number on ventilators also continues to rise. 

In total, 185,643 cases have been reported across the state with 4,294 deaths.
