Golf cart drivers to be cited

Parents who allow their children to drive golf carts and ATVs on county roads outside municipalities will soon be subject to fines, Sheriff Randy Tucker announced this week.

Tucker said although golf carts and ATVs are illegal to ride in neighborhoods, his department has allowed neighborhoods and HOAs to police them up to this point.

“It has reached aa saturation point where it’s completely out of hand,” Tucker said. “I can’t wait until a child gets killed to do something.”

Tucker said his deputies are currently issuing warning citations but come Aug. 1 they will begin fining the parents of the children operating the vehicles. Adults, too, will get fined if they drive them.

“State law says they’re illegal to operate by anyone on a public roadway — adult or children,” he said. “It’s finally come to a head.”

Tucker said there are problems throughout all neighborhoods in unincorporated Madison County, from Lake Caroline to Deerfield and Ashbrooke.

The city of Madison allows for the operation of golf carts on city streets in Annandale, Reunion and Northbay following passage of a state law allowing the city to govern golf cart use. In 2018, the city approved golf carts on streets in those three neighborhoods.

The city requires golf carts to not exceed 20 m.p.h., have working headlights and for the driver to have a valid license, among other things.
