Madison’s first ‘Merry Market’ set for Dec. 10

MADISON — The first annual Merry Market is set for Dec. 10 here on Main Street at Montgomery.

Director of Economic Development Amy Cummins said the idea of a Christmas-themed market arose from people asking about a fall or holiday market similar to the Farmers Market.

“Merry Market will be down Main Street and Montgomery Street and will have around 120 vendors, and we’re sold out of slots,” Cummins said. “The vendors will have a little bit of everything, such as jewelry, artwork, woodwork, clothing, pottery, candles, bakery items such as cakes and pies, and more. Everyone there will be able to find something.”

The market is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10. Food trucks will be on site, and in conjunction with the market, the Junior Auxiliary of Madison will have a “hot chocolate and cookies” event for the kids in the Madison Square Center for the Arts where children can write letters to Santa and take pictures with him. Cummins said tickets for that event will be on sale within the next week or two on the Junior Auxiliary website for $8 each.

Cummins said she hopes the market will bring people out to shop local and get in the Christmas spirit.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in this and we’re excited people are wanting to come out,” she said. “Madison has never had anything like this before and being able to bring something like this to the city and make it local is great. People can get last minute Christmas gifts and support local businesses, and I feel this is something we’ve needed in Madison. We urge everyone to also visit other businesses on Main Street while at the market, which will also be open.”

“We hope it’s a success and we can keep the tradition of it going year after year. We’ll have more information on our social media pages when the event gets closer,” Cummins said.
