Madison police said the victim of a Sunday afternoon one-vehicle motorcycle wreck succumbed to his injuries Monday afternoon.

Mitchell C. Brown, 65, of Madison died Monday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson due to injuries sustained in the wreck, said Madison Police Capt. Kevin Newman.

Brown was the injured driver involved in the motorcycle traffic crash on Interstate 55 on Sunday, Feb. 28, Newman said.

“The men and women of the Madison Police Department extend their condolences as well as their thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Mr. Brown,” Newman said.

The crash remains under investigation by traffic crash investigators of the Madison Police Department, Newman said.

Newman said the accident occurred at approximately 3:19 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, and the MPD received a call about a one-vehicle motorcycle accident northbound on Interstate 55 near the 109 mile-marker.

“Upon officers’ and other emergency personnels’ arrival they found a male driver of the motorcycle along with the bike in the center median area of the interstate,” Newman said. “Emergency personnel immediately began administering aid to the driver who appeared to be seriously injured.”

Through information obtained from witnesses, officers were able to determine that the motorcycle was proceeding northbound on I-55 in that area when, for an unknown reason, the driver lost control. Newman said as a result the motorcycle crashed on the grassy area of the center median of the interstate.

The left northbound lane of I-55 was blocked for approximately an hour and a half while the accident scene was cleared, Newman said.
