Mayor to veto Canton Flea Market
CANTON — Aldermen here last week approved the Fall Flea Market scheduled for Oct. 8, an event that brings thousands artisans and shoppers to the City of Lights each year. The vote was 6-1.
Mayor William Truly on Wednesday announced his decision to veto the green light by aldermen, saying it was unwise amidst a pandemic.
There have been 20 positive cases of COVID-19 among students throughout Madison County and another five faculty and staff impacted, according to data from the State Department of Health.
The data were updated Tuesday, Sept. 4 and specific schools are not named.
Last week, the county had five cases among students and two among teachers and staff.
According to MSDH, a total of 165 students in Madison County had been quarantined due to exposure during the week of Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. Another 17 faculty and staff were quarantined.
The state does not report which specific school districts are impacted and by how much.
This week, St. Joesph Catholic School in Madison reported three volleyball players had tested positive for COVID-19.
On Tuesday, Gov. Tate Reeves applauded Mississippians’ efforts in practicing social distancing and helping to curb the virus as he announced the state had the lowest rate of COVID-19 reproduction in the country.
On Wednesday, the state reported 426 new cases and 39 new deaths. On Tuesday, the state reported zero deaths for the first time in months.
Mississippi had its highest daily case numbers peak over 1,600 near the end of July.
In Madison County, 67 cases have been identified in the last week, bringing the total here to 3,076. Last week, there was an increase by 207 cases.
In total, 87,805 Mississippians have either been confirmed or presumed to have COVID-19, with 2,623 total deaths.
As of Wednesday, the state reported 83 COVID-related deaths in Madison County, with no increase from last week. There have been 234 cases in long-term care facilities and 44 deaths.
The MSDH is reporting statewide that hospitalizations have declined from 663 to 525 since last week, with ICU patients down from 196 to 185. Ventilator usage dropped from 117 to 111.
