The Gluckstadt Fire Department is now better equipped to save its four-legged friends, thanks to a recent donation of pet oxygen masks from a North Carolina-based non-profit.

The department received eight oxygen masks specifically designed for use on animals from the Mona Pants Foundation, said Division Chief Dustin Perry. The masks were delivered on June 9.

“This is the first time our department has had this lifesaving equipment to help our furry citizens in need," the department said in a social media post thanking the foundation. "Thanks to this donation, we’re now better prepared to care for all members of our community.”

Perry said the masks would be used in situations where an animal has been rescued from a burning building or has suffered from smoke inhalation. He was prompted to seek out the donation after reflecting on his own experiences as a firefighter.

“In my experience, we pull more animals out of burning buildings than humans,” Perry said.

According to the foundation’s website, its mission is to supply pet oxygen mask kits to first responders across the country. Each kit costs between $85 and $100.
