RIDGELAND — Small Business Saturday is fast approaching this weekend following Mayor Gene McGee’s proclamation earlier this month that certified Nov. 26 as Small Business Saturday.

McGee said locally owned small businesses are the backbone of Ridgeland.

“Many of our small businesses are owned by Ridgeland residents and we want them to grow and prosper,” McGee said. “When small businesses succeed, we all succeed.”

McGee signed the proclamation on Nov. 1, citing that according to the United States Small Business Administration, there are 32.5 million small businesses in the country, small businesses represent 99.7% of firms with paid employees, small businesses are responsible for 62% of net new jobs created since 1995, and small businesses employ 46.8% of the workers in the private sector of the United States.

Small Business Saturday was originally created by American Express in 2010 and serves as the ceremonial kickoff to the holiday shopping season for small businesses around the country.

The City of Ridgeland, the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce, and Ridgeland Tourism Commission are lending their support to Small Business Saturday to drive commerce to local businesses.

Linda Bynum, executive director of the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber is proud to partner with Ridgeland and the Ridgeland Tourism Commission.

“We’re proud to support this special day celebrating the small businesses that play a vital role in creating jobs and economic opportunities across our state,” Bynum said. “Small Business Saturday celebrates the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship, as exemplified by small business owners who take the risk of following their dreams.”

Small Business Saturday begins on Nov. 26. For more information, contact the City of Ridgeland at (601) 856-7113.
