Supervisors say no to extra signs for barbecue restaurant

County supervisors on Monday denied a local restaurant owner’s request to add off-premises signage to try and lure more customers off Interstate 55.

Warren Wright, owner of Little Willie’s BBQ in Gluckstadt, requested permission to have two signs directing people coming off the interstate to his eatery off Highway 51 at Yandell Road. The signs, considered “trailblazers,” would be placed in conjunction with his logo on the blue interstate sign notifying drivers of nearby restaurants. Trailblazer signs are placed at every corner where motorists have to turn to direct them from the interstate to a business.

“The sign on the interstate is not a problem,” Wright told supervisors. “(Mississippi Logos) can’t sell me the sign on the interstate unless we have the trailblazers.”

Wright wanted signs placed on Weisenberger Road and Parkway East for people exiting off of the interstate.

District 1 Supervisor Sheila Jones said the intersection off I-55 is not like other intersections in the county, in that there are several zig-zags and additional signage would ultimately distract drivers.

“There are lots of turns,” she said. “You can get lost, even. I think it’s going to distract the drivers. I’d love for everybody to eat at Willie’s…but I’m going to be against this.”

Jones made a motion to deny the request and received a second from District 2 Supervisor Trey Baxter.

Board President Gerald Steen made a substitute motion to table the matter for two weeks to get additional information on how the signs would appear and how large they would be.

“I would like to just look at it,” he said. “I am familiar enough to know that a restaurant needs as much help as they can get to bring customers from the interstate to your business. I would just like to go and look at the sign.”
