Chase starts in Madison, ends in Jackson
A pair wanted in Alabama has been arrested and charged in connection with a Monday morning police pursuit that began in Madison and ended in downtown Jackson.
The two suspects have been identified as Steven Eric Garner and Dana Marie Morales, according to Madison Police Cap. Kevin Newman.
Garner, 44, of Jasper, Ala., was charged with felony receiving stolen property, felony fleeing and petit larceny. Newman said Garner is also wanted for receiving stolen property and attempting to elude police in Cullman County, Ala.
Morales, 51, of Cullman County, Ala., was charged with felony receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit a crime. Morales is also wanted for receiving stolen property in Cullman County, Ala., Newman said.
Both subjects are currently being held in the Madison County Detention Center. Newman said both individuals were scheduled for an initial appearance in Madison Municipal Court for some time Wednesday where bond would be set.
Newman said the arrests stem from an incident on Monday, July 31, at 9:12 a.m., when MPD officers responded to a report of subjects in a vehicle in the Windsor Hills neighborhood of Madison who had stolen items from a garage at a residence.
Officers encountered the 2003 Toyota Tundra pickup truck on Highway 463 near Interstate 55 and upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver fled southbound on Interstate 55 with officers in pursuit, Newman said.
Officers also learned that the vehicle was reported stolen from Walker County, Alabama.
The vehicle pursuit continued southbound on I-55 at which time the vehicle exited west onto Beasley Road and then southbound on State Street.
The vehicle continued south on State Street at which time the Capitol Police Department assisted with the pursuit, Newman said. The fleeing vehicle continued south on State Street turning west onto Highway 80 and then north onto Interstate 220. The vehicle then exited Interstate 220 east on West Capitol Street.
The vehicle continued on Capitol Street turning north on Congress Street. Newman said, upon turning on Congress Street, the vehicle stopped at which time the driver and occupant surrendered to officers.
While responding to assist with the pursuit, a Capitol Police Department vehicle was involved in an accident with a third-party vehicle on State Street near East Rankin Street, Newman said.
“There were no injuries reported as a result of the accident,” Newman said.
