The new Chief of Police in Gluckstadt says he is looking forward to keeping the city safe and growing the department.

“We want to have a professional, experienced department that is community-oriented and visible,” said Chief Barry Hale. “My concern will be the safety of this community and the well-being of all who live or work in or visit Gluckstadt.”

Hale started the job last Tuesday following the resignation of Police Chief Wendell Watts.

Hale has been in law enforcement for 21 years including a 20-year stint with the Jackson Police Department prior to taking the assistant chief job here in May of 2022.

“It's a calling,” Hale said of his career in law enforcement. “It is something you love.”

Watts said he specifically brought Hale in because he knew he would be a good candidate to replace him.

“I brought him on for the sole reason to follow me and take over after I left,” Watts said of Hale. “The department is in a great position for him to continue going in the direction we are going or to go in another direction.”

Watts submitted his resignation to Mayor Walter Morrison and the aldermen on Tuesday, Sept. 26, after 16 months. At that same meeting city officials voted to hire Hale as police chief.

As Chief of Police, Hale will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Gluckstadt Police Department, implementing effective crime prevention strategies, and maintaining a strong partnership with the community, according to a press release from the city announcing Hale’s hiring. He will work closely with city officials, other law enforcement agencies, and community organizations to address the evolving needs and concerns of city residents and business owners.

“I just want to thank Chief Watts for getting the department where it is today and to the Mayor and Board for showing their faith in me to lead Gluckstadt PD into the future,” Hale said. “I hope to be here for many years.”

Mayor Morrison expressed confidence in Chief Hale's ability to lead the Gluckstadt Police Department, stating, "Chief Hale has a proven track record of exemplary service and a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by our young community. We are thrilled to welcome him as our new Chief of Police and are confident that he will continue to enhance public safety and strengthen the bond between our police force and the residents of Gluckstadt."

Hale lives in Brandon with his wife Shalon Hale and their two children Austin and Makenna Rose Hale.
