Police officers recognized for saving woman’s life

The Gluckstadt Mayor and Board of Aldermen recently recognized two officers who saved a woman’s life from an overdose late last month by administering NARCAN and CPR.

Sgt. Kyrie Lucas and Officer Duane Montgomery were officially recognized at the Feb. 13 meeting.

“Day in and day out these officers protect and serve our community and put their lives on the line,” Chief Barry Hale said. “We are glad we could recognize some of our guys for doing an outstanding job.”

Hale said the officers had completed a recent round of lifesaving training that included instructions on how to use NARCAN (Naloxone), a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose, and CPR certification.

“We are grateful to Sergeant Lucas and Officer Montgomery for their training, knowledge, and quick thinking,” a statement from the city reads. “These two are a huge blessing to Gluckstadt and the young lady they saved! We are proud to honor them, and certainly proud to call them GPD. Thank you for your service and all you did that night.” 

Kimberly Waller, who placed the 911 call and stayed on the scene until first responders arrived, was also recognized.

Police received a call at about 9 p.m. on Jan 26, about a drug overdose inside a vehicle on Catlett Road just north of First Colony. 

Lucas and Montgomery were dispatched and found a young female lying on the ground unresponsive with no pulse. 

A passenger told officers she had taken some type of narcotic. 

Montgomery immediately started CPR while Lucas administered multiple doses of NARCAN.

Montgomery continued with CPR until the Gluckstadt Fire Department arrived. After multiple doses of NARCAN along with CPR, the woman was revived and was transported to St. Dominic.
