Trio fleeing from police arrested after chase

MADISON — A Memphis trio has been arrested and charged in connection with a felony shoplifting case that led to a high-speed pursuit on the interstate.

The suspects have been identified as Mario Flynn, 30, Terreuna T. Brown, 21, and Daimond Hill, 23, according to Capt. Kevin Newman of the Madison Police Department.

“All suspects who fled the scene at the termination of the vehicle pursuit have been apprehended at this time,” Newman said.

Flynn faces the most serious charges including felony shoplifting, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing, and conspiracy to commit a felony with a felony hit-and-run charge also pending.  

Newman said Hill faces charges of felony shoplifting, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy to commit a felony. 

Brown faces one charge of felony shoplifting and one count of providing false identification.

“Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues,” Newman said.

The arrests stem from an incident on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 5:17 p.m., when MPD received a report of a felony shoplifting at Best Buy, 175 Grandview Boulevard.   

Responding officers learned that two male subjects had stolen several laptops and other electronic equipment valued at several thousand dollars and left the parking lot in a white BMW sedan bearing a Texas license plate, Newman said.  

“A short time later a Madison Police officer observed a vehicle matching the description traveling southbound on Interstate 55 from Madison into the Ridgeland city limits,” Newman said. 

As other officers were approaching the vehicle at the East County Line Road exit in Ridgeland, the vehicle turned suddenly striking the driver’s side front fender of one of the police vehicles which had pulled alongside the suspect vehicle, according to Newman.  

The vehicle then fled onto the frontage road, made a U-turn, and proceeded northbound onto Interstate 55. More officers joined in the pursuit as the driver got back on I-55 and proceeded northbound back into Madison County. As the vehicle approached mile marker 114 at Sowell Road it swiped the side of a vehicle causing minor damage to that vehicle without stopping. There were no injuries reported at mile marker 114.

The driver continued northbound on I-55 exiting onto Highway 16 west north of Canton striking a Toyota Camry and disabling the vehicle where the two male subjects fled on foot and Brown was taken into custody. 

“The driver of the Camry received non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to a local hospital,” Newman said. “There were no other occupants of the Toyota Camry.”

With assistance from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the Canton Police Department, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol, a perimeter was established around the wooded area where the subjects fled, Newman said.

At about 1:40 a.m., the next day Hill was apprehended near I-55 at mile marker 128.

Newman said Flynn would not be arrested until 3:20 a.m. that same morning near Hamblin Road in Canton.
