Veterans Town Hall set for Oct. 25

Madison County is holding a Veteran’s Town Hall in Canton on Oct. 25 to offer vital information for veterans. 

Madison County Veteran Service Officer Mendell Kemp says there are over 6,000 veterans in the county and this town hall will be an important place for veterans to raise any concerns they have about things like disability and pension claims, survivor’s benefits, and more. 

“This town hall will clear up any misunderstandings about why claims have recently been denied or if veterans haven’t gotten the ratings they think they deserve,” Kemp said. “The Jackson VA Regional Office has been closed for over a year due to mold in the building and the original staff is working from home. Because of this, there is a lot of information veterans need. As the County Veteran Service Officer and Vietnam veteran, I see every day that veterans need information that the office does not have.”

The town hall will be held at the Canton Multipurpose Complex at 501 Soldiers Colony Rd., located about two miles west of the Canton Square. It begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. 

Kemp said representatives from the Jackson VA Regional Office, Jackson VA Medical Center, and the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board will make a presentation and address all questions and concerns from anyone in attendance. 

“The Madison County Board of Supervisors and County Veteran Services Office are honoring veterans and their families by providing updated information about accessing Disability and Pension Claims, Education and Job Training, Healthcare, Home Loans and Dependents / Survivor’s Benefits,” he said. “Veterans will be able to check the status of pending claims and file new claims. They’ll have a better understanding of what they are entitled to.”
