A Jackson man has been taken into custody after fleeing a traffic stop with a Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper, authorities said.

The man, Alontavious Sims, 23, of Jackson, was taken into custody with charges pending this morning, MHP Public Affairs Officer Darnika Mayfield said.

“This incident is under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol,” Mayfield said.

At approximately 10:51 a.m., on Sept. 5, Mayfield said Mississippi Highway Patrol State Troopers made a traffic stop on a Dodge Challenger at the 107-mile-marker for speeding and having no seatbelt.

After the Trooper returned to his vehicle, the driver threw the citation out the window and drove off headed south, Mayfield said. The Trooper attempted to initiate another traffic stop with the Dodge Challenger for littering.

The driver led a State Trooper in a pursuit, then sideswiped a Toyota Corolla. The pursuit ended at the 102-mile marker on I-55 South. The driver of the Challenger was identified as Sims. Mayfield said he was taken into custody without incident and taken to the Madison County Detention Center in Canton.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
