Man who wrecked fleeing police receives 20 years
A Memphis man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a felony evasion incident that ended in a crash with injuries in Madison last October.
The man, Mario Flynn, 31, pleaded guilty to one count of felony evasion resulting in serious bodily
injury in Madison County Circuit Court Madison on Sept. 10.
“He was sentenced to 20 years to serve in the Mississippi Department of Corrections,” according to District Attorney Bubba Bramlett. “The maximum penalty allowed by law.”
On October 19, 2023, an officer with the Madison Police Department responded to the Best Buy on Grandview Boulevard, Bramlett said. Per the store security officer, two males appeared to have taken several laptops and cameras.
Law Enforcement officers identified a white BMW X6 bearing Texas plates as the suspect vehicle. Shortly after the initial call came in, an MPD officer noticed the suspect vehicle entering the Interstate 55 ramp southbound.
The suspect car exited onto County Line Road, re-entered onto I55, and headed northbound.
Once northbound on I55, the vehicle reached speeds of up to 128 miles per hour, Bramlett said. Another MPD officer saw the suspects in the BMW throwing boxes out of the window during the pursuit.
The car, driven by Mario Flynn, took the Highway 22 exit at Canton and hit a vehicle.
The crash caused severe injuries, including a fractured vertebra and multiple rib fractures. Flynn and the other male fled on foot, but officers were able to quickly track them down.
Bramlett said officers found Flynn lying under a trailer. He was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries he suffered during the wreck.
“We continue to see individuals running from law enforcement in Madison and Rankin counties. Please, let this case speak to the inherent danger in running from police at high rates of speed. Innocent people can and do get hurt and, when that happens, those responsible will be facing lengthy prison sentences,” Bramlett said.
Also arrested in that incident were Terreuna T. Brown, 21, and Daimond Hill, 23. They are also from Memphis.
According to Bramlett’s office, Terreuna Brown pleaded to one count of conspiracy to commit shoplifting. She was a first-time offender and was allowed to plead to five years with all five years suspended in exchange for truthful testimony against Flynn.
She said Hill is yet to be served his indictment.
