The Range offers women’s classes

The Range by Jimmy Primos is offering detailed, hands-on conceal carry classes for women to learn the basics of handling a weapon and how to properly use it.

Layne Magee, assistant manager at The Range and coordinator of the women’s conceal carry class, said the class focuses on what women need to know about gun laws in Mississippi that surround concealed carry and when and how to use a firearm.

“We go into detail on stance, grip, and how you look down the sights,” Magee said. “We practice in the range for around 50 rounds, and then 25 rounds to qualify. The state requires eight hours of training to have an instructor-certified certificate that you take to the state to get your concealed carry.”

Other things taught in the course include the fundamentals of holding, loading and using a weapon, how to mentally survive a hostile encounter, and where you can and cannot carry a gun in and outside of Mississippi.

Magee said the most important things women will learn in the class are the gun laws in Mississippi.

“A lot of people don’t know the type of firearm they have,” he said. “They don’t know the make, model, or the type of caliber. We teach that, and do private lessons here to make sure people get that education they need. It will make them feel better about carrying a firearm. I’ve got four girls in my house, my wife included, and I think every woman should have a concealed carry.”

The women’s conceal carry class meets for eight hours on two Saturdays per month from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on specific Mondays and Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Each class is $200, and students will be given special care to make sure they have the knowledge and confidence to use a firearm. The purpose of the class is to prepare the mind for a confrontation.

Women taking the class are encouraged to bring close-toed shoes, a long or short-sleeved shirt, driver’s license, and a personal firearm if preferred.
