A Canton man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for a series of unrelated crimes that included the February 2024 stabbing of a convenience store owner.

Madison County District Attorney Bubba Bramlett announced Tuesday that Moses Gordon, 46, was sentenced for the crimes.

The first sentence came after Gordon pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault of the convenience store owner.

Bramlett said the sentence “is the maximum allowed by law.”

Gordon also pleaded guilty to an unrelated charge of possession of methamphetamine in Madison, Bramlett said. He received the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison in that case as well.

On Feb. 19, Canton PD was dispatched to the Quick and Easy, 3510 N Liberty St., Canton.

“On scene,” Bramlett said. “They discovered the store’s owner, Balwinder Singh, had been stabbed.”

The victim told officers that the Gordon had previously stolen beer from the store. Gordon had once again come into the store, and Singh asked him to leave. Gordon began threatening Singh, and Singh told him to leave.

“When Singh followed Gordon into the parking lot,” Bramlett said. “Gordon pulled out a knife and stabbed Singh in the face.”

Officers quickly canvased the area and located Gordon hiding in a truck. Bramlett said they detained him and found the bloody knife still in Gordon’s pocket.

The drug case stems from an incident on November 23, 2022, incident when Gordon was involved in an accident on Highway 51.

According to Bramlett, when Madison County Sheriff Deputies arrived at the scene of the accident, Gordon had several misdemeanor warrants out for his arrest. During the pat down while being taken into custody, deputies found 10.62 grams of methamphetamine in his pocket, Bramlett said.
